Green Monday

Vižmarje Brod Primary School joined the Green Monday movement in the winter of 2011.

The goal of Green Monday is to make us aware that by reducing meat consumption, we reduce our own impact on the environment and also the likelihood of contracting certain chronic diseases. Green Monday offers an easy way to limit your ecological footprint and rediscover a way of eating that is kind to us and our planet. If we give up meat once a week, we reduce its consumption by about 15%. According to the World Health Organization, 90% of the population in our region does not consume the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables. Any reduction in the production and consumption of meat, which increases greenhouse gas emissions, overexploitation of land, water and air, deforestation and the expansion of desert world, brings enormous benefits to the environment.

Happy Meatless Mondays

Of all the foods on our menus, meat consumes the largest share of natural resources. If we exclude meat from our menu one day a week, this automatically means that we will eat more fruits and vegetables. At Vižmarje Brod Elementary School, we will prepare dishes without meat every Monday and thereby reduce its consumption by 15%. On Monday, we will include more locally grown fruits and vegetables.

Why Monday? The week starts on Monday. On Monday, we make plans for the upcoming week's activities. Research shows that it is easier to make changes in life habits if we start them on the first day of the year, the first of the month or at the beginning of the week, on Monday. Monday is therefore the best day to make a change that will benefit our health and the health of the entire planet.

And why a day without meat?

There are quite a few reasons for introducing Green Monday:

benefits health, helps reduce the carbon footprint, reduces world hunger, helps preserve valuable natural sources of drinking water and valuable natural sources of oil. More "green" food maintains health and well-being, prevents increased body weight, reduces the possibility of cardiovascular diseases , reduces the likelihood of cancer, the likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes and many other diseases, and prolongs life.

The Meatless Monday movement was born in Ghent, Belgium, followed by Sao Paolo in Brazil, Tel Aviv in Israel, and Cape Town in Africa. Then the initiative was followed by other Belgian cities, Great Britain, Canada, Finland, the USA, Brazil, the Netherlands, Taiwan, Australia. In 2011, neighboring Croatia joined the movement, and from May 2011, Slovenia too.
